Explore The Ferryboat Binghamton

Jon W. Adams, Director of 3D Reality Capture and Laurence R. Penn, Senior Forensic Animation/Video Specialist,

The Reality Capture and Engineering Animation Department at DJS is delighted to share the data we collected from The Ferryboat Binghamton using the interactive platform, Sketchfab. Sketchfab allows you to interact the data in 3-Dimensions, adjusting the view of the data and zooming into particular areas of interest.

In 2016, DJS was contracted to aid in the documentation of the moored historic ferryboat, which was scheduled to be demolished due to irreparable damage after Hurricane Sandy. As part of the demolition, the remaining structure of the ferryboat needed to be memorialized prior to removal, given its historic status. DJS documented the ferryboat via a combination of 3D laser scanning and Unmanned Aerial System (UAS, also known as a drone).

The images captured by the drone were utilized to produce a 3D photogrammetric point cloud, which was combined with the land-based 3D laser scan data. In the end, a comprehensive dataset was collected of the ferryboat, without stepping foot onto the vessel. Take a look and have fun exploring!
